‘Scotland was beautiful but we were plagued by midges so we won’t be going back there again for a holiday!’
My name is Juliet Caird. I am from the east of Scotland but lived in Devon for 16 years and was told this more times than I could possibly count.
When I moved back to Scotland, to the west side, I began to sympathise with the people who had made this comment – I was plagued by midges! I suffer from organophosphate (pesticide) poisoning and cannot use insect repellents or pesticides so was driven, by desperation, to purchasing a MidgeMaster for my smallholding. I was delighted by the improvement in the situation, which was noticeable within days of use of the machine, and has become progressively better since then. The quality of life has also improved for my llamas.
The MidgeMaster (2003 Pro model) protects two paddocks and the garden and vegetable plot. There are still a few midges on bad days, but not nearly enough to be nuisance anymore. They were previously intolerable. We can now work or sit outside happily every summer evening.
I was so impressed by the machine that I have become an agent for the company.
MidgeBlaster will change the holidaymakers’ opinion of Scotland.

MidgeBlaster’ tips on the Use of the MidgeMaster
Which model should you choose?
Choose a model of MidgeMaster based on the midge density and the size of area to be protected.
If midges are a nuisance and the garden is not very big, then the MidgeMaster Defender, currently our bestseller (over 200,000 sold worldwide since March, 2003) is the answer. It is the most affordable unit and covers up to half an acre. It runs on propane and must be plugged into the mains (low voltage 50 foot cable). This model can potentially catch up to 250,000 midges per day.
If midges are a real problem, or just a nuisance but the garden is big, then the MidgeMaster Liberty Plus is the model for you. This unit covers up to one acre. It runs on propane and does not need a mains electricity supply. This gives more flexibility in the siting of the traps to achieve maximum catch rate. It has a larger midge collecting net than the Defender model and has been proven to catch up to a million midges a day in areas of high midge density.
If the midge situation is desperate, or the area to be covered is large, or for commercial use, MidgeMaster Pro or Pro Plus models are suitable. They are incredibly effective midge catchers. They generate their own electricity using solar panels and do not need a mains supply.
The MidgeMaster Pro model was the best selling midge trap in the UK in 2003, being capable of catching over 3 million midges in 24 hours. This model protects up to 1.25 acres.
The MidgeMaster Pro Plus model is the ultimate midge trap, protecting up to 1.5 acres.
Under certain circumstances, for example a big garden with more than one separate large source of midges, or a large hotel which impedes the flow of carbon dioxide and octenol (midge attractants) from the front garden to the rear garden, it may be more beneficial to use two Liberty Plus models rather than one Pro Plus model, which would be only slightly more expensive.

Continuous use of the MidgeMaster throughout the midge season
The MidgeMaster reduces the population of midges considerably within the first few days and continues to do so. There is then a further reduction in the population after 4-6 weeks due to interruption of the breeding cycle and a lower hatch rate. The following year, there is a lower initial hatch rate. Thus the population is progressively and greatly reduced over time. If the machine is turned off during the midge season, the midge population does begin to rise again, relatively quickly. Because of this, we recommend that the machine be left running for the whole midge season, even when holiday homes are unoccupied. This is inexpensive and easy because the units do not need to be checked frequently. Long term use of the machine is obviously much more beneficial than short term use.
Positioning of the MidgeMaster
Correct positioning of the MidgeMaster for maximum catch rate is important. The machine should be placed between the main source of midges (wet area) and the people, so that midges reach the machine before the people. Also remember that the attractant travels downwind and midges generally fly upwind to their victims. If the machine does not seem to be very effective initially, move it to a different site and you will probably be delighted by the improvement.
Operating the MidgeMaster
Follow the manufacturer’s simple instructions, particularly remembering to replace the octenol (powerful attractant) at 21 day intervals. The result of forgetting to do this will be noticed fairly quickly (this demonstrates the extra effectiveness of the MidgeMaster compared to insect traps which rely on carbon dioxide as the sole attractant chemical). We recommend that you write the change due date on your calendar.
Interested Visitors
Tell visitors that, if they stand beside the MidgeMaster, they are likely to transport a few midges from the machine’s swarm away with them. If they ignore you and inspect the machine anyway, it will only result in a very temporary problem but they won’t walk away from the machine irritatingly saying, ‘it doesn’t work – I’m being bitten by midges!’
