Camping and caravan sites – how MidgeBlaster can help you

‘Scotland was beautiful but we were plagued by midges so we won’t be going back there again for a holiday! We took our tents, but the midges were unbearable on the first night, so we packed up our tent and stayed in a B+B for the rest of the holiday.’

My name is Juliet Caird. I am from the east of Scotland but lived in Devon for 16 years and was told this type of story more times than I could possibly count.

When I moved back to Scotland, on the west side, I began to sympathise with the people who had made this type of comment – I was plagued by midges! I suffer from organophosphate (pesticide) poisoning and cannot use insect repellents or pesticides so was driven, by desperation, to purchasing a MidgeMaster for my smallholding. I was delighted by the improvement in the situation, which was noticeable within days of use of the machine, and has become progressively better since then. The quality of life has also improved for my llamas.

The MidgeMaster (2003 Pro model) protects two paddocks and the garden and vegetable plot. There are still a few midges on bad days but not nearly enough to be a nuisance anymore. They were previously intolerable. We have had peaceful barbecues and many of our friends have now camped in the garden and paddocks in summer, undisturbed by midges.

I have been so impressed by the machine that I have become an agent for the company.

MidgeBlaster will change the holidaymakers’ opinion of Scotland.

MidgeBlaster tips for owners of campsites and caravan sites

Which model should you choose?

MidgeMaster Pro or Pro Plus models are suitable for commercial use. They are incredibly effective midge catchers. We do not recommend the use of a Defender or a Liberty Plus model unless you have a very small campsite or low midge density (the Liberty Plus covers up to an acre but is less powerful than the Pro models).

The MidgeMaster Pro model was the best selling midge trap in the UK in 2003, being capable of catching 3,000,000 midges in 24 hours. This model protects up to 1.25 acres.

The MidgeMaster Pro Plus model is the ultimate midge trap, protecting up to 1.5 acres

These models have virtually unlimited life, having removable power packs, containing all the operating parts, which allows for easy rebuilding, repair or upgrading. They generate their own electricity using industrial strength solar panels and thus do not require a mains electricity supply. This fact, and the dual wheel base and strong handle, allow for easy repositioning of the machine.

To cope with all types of weather, the covers are made of industrial strength PVC, as used in marine engineering, and the tough metal bases are powder coated.

Where should I position the MidgeMaster?
Correct positioning of the MidgeMaster for maximum catch rate is important. The machine should be placed between the main source of midges (wet area) and the people, so that midges reach the machine before the people. Also remember that the attractant travels downwind and midges generally fly upwind to their victims. If the machine does not seem to be very effective initially, move it to a different site and you will probably be delighted by the improvement.

Continuous use of MidgeMaster throughout the midge season
The MidgeMaster reduces the population of midges considerably within the first few days and continues to do so. There is then a further reduction in the population after 4-6 weeks due to interruption of the breeding cycle and a lower hatch rate. The following year, there is a lower initial hatch rate. Thus the population is progressively and greatly reduced over time. If the machine is turned off during the midge season, the midge population does begin to rise again relatively quickly. Because of this, we recommend that the machine be left running for the whole midge season, even when the site is unoccupied. This is inexpensive and easy because the unit does not need to be checked frequently.

Long term use of the machine is obviously much more beneficial than short term use.

Operating the MidgeMaster
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully (these are very straightforward), particularly remembering to replace the octenol (powerful attractant) at 21 day intervals. The result of forgetting to do this will be noticed fairly quickly (this demonstrates the extra effectiveness of the MidgeMaster in comparison to insect traps which rely solely on carbon dioxide as an attractant). We recommend that you record the date due in your calendar.

Interested Visitors
Tell visitors that, if they stand beside the MidgeMaster, they are likely to transport a few midges from the machine’s swarm away with them. If they ignore you and inspect the machine anyway, it will only result in a very temporary problem but, at least they won’t walk away from the machine irritatingly saying, ‘It doesn’t work – I’m being bitten by midges!’
