Commercial Enterprises - how MidgeBlaster can help you

Commercial scale MidgeMasters are available and are already being used by a wide range of enterprises.

My name is Juliet Caird. I have been a veterinary surgeon for 18 years and I suffer from organophosphate (pesticide) poisoning. As a result of this I cannot use any pesticides or repellents on myself or animals. I live on a smallholding in an area of high midge density in the west of Scotland. This was causing great problems because the humans and the animals were being tormented by midges. Last year, in desperation, I purchased a MidgeMaster Pro model. It has far exceeded our expectations. Within days it had dramatically reduced the number of midges and the corresponding level of irritation. It has continued to improve the situation. It protects two small paddocks and a yard with ten large herbivores (llamas, sheep and ponies). It also protects the garden and vegetable plot, allowing us to work outside or to just enjoy being outdoors at any time of day.

I have been so impressed by the machine that I am happy to recommend the MidgeMaster to anyone with a midge problem and I have become an agent for the company.

Examples of the many businesses to which the MidgeMaster offers help are as follows:-

MidgeBlaster tips on the use of the MidgeMaster for commercial premises

Position of MidgeMaster
The machine must be placed in the correct position for maximum midge catch rate. This is generally between the main source of midges (wet area) and the people/animals to be protected. Remember, also, that the attractant will be carried by the wind and that midges tend to travel upwind towards the machine.
If the machine appears to be ineffective initially, try repositioning it and you will probably be very pleased with the result.

Number of MidgeMasters to use
Depending on the layout of your premises, it may be wise to consider purchasing two Liberty Plus MidgeMasters (or, even better, two Pro series models) rather than one Pro series model. This would probably be more effective in the following situations:-

  • The premises consists of two or more blocks of buildings well apart from each other. Two machines situated in separate locations may be more likely to effectively protect the area including all the buildings.
  • Two large blocks of buildings are situated back to back or one large building has entrances at the front and rear. The presence of a big object, such a large building, will impede the flow of carbon dioxide and octenol (midge attractants) from the MidgeMaster and so the side of the building on which the machine is placed will benefit more than the opposite side. The use of two machines will ensure that each side of the building has equal benefit.
  • There is more than one major source of midges (wet area) on different sides of the premises. Ideally, the MidgeMaster should be placed between a midge source and the people to be protected so that the midges reach the MidgeMaster before their victim. Two machines would allow for this and be likely to be more effective than one machine.

In many cases two Liberty Plus models would be adequate. These models cover up to one acre each and, like the Pro series, are freestanding with no electricity cable. The total cost of two Liberty Plus models is slightly more than that of one Pro Plus model.

You could consider the purchase of one machine initially, to find out if this is adequate. It may well be enough. My 2003 Pro model certainly protects several distinct areas with stables, a hedge and a wall within the protected area.

Operation of the MidgeMaster
Follow the manufacturer’s simple instructions, particularly remembering to renew the octenol (powerful attractant) at 21 day intervals. Failure to do this will result in a noticeable difference (this demonstrates the extra effectiveness of the MidgeMaster in comparison to insect traps which rely solely on carbon dioxide as an attractant). We recommend that you mark the change dates due on your calendar.

Continuous use of the MidgeMaster throughout the midge season
The MidgeMaster greatly and progressively reduces the midge population over time, generally with a noticeable further improvement from one year to the next. If, however, it is switched off during the midge season, the midge population does begin to rise again relatively quickly. For this reason, we recommend that the MidgeMaster be left running continuously for best results, even over weekends and during holidays. This is inexpensive and easy because the machine does not need to be checked very regularly.

Commercial benefit to your business
If you purchase a MidgeMaster from us, your premises will be registered on our MidgeBlaster website. We will happily arrange links between our website and yours, if requested.

United States Department of Agriculture approves the MidgeMaster
‘New Midge trap: a highly effective mosquito trap, based on the ‘counterflow’ principle, was developed by USDA-ARS scientists and private sector cooperators, and has been marketed as the MidgeMaster. Powered by propane gas, this is a quiet and effective trap for use by homeowners and livestock producers.’ Source: United States Department of Agriculture Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology.

Harry PotterTM ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’ Location Manager approves the MidgeMaster
‘In my experience as a Location Manager for Warner Bros. Films, I’ve come to understand the need for adapting to one’s environment to have a successful film set, and a happy and productive crew. In filming on a sound stage, the crew is in complete control, but if you move that same crew outdoors, they are equally, if not more so, victimized by the environmental effects in the area they are working. Biting insects present a very big nuisance to both cast and crew both in front of and behind the camera. This summer, in Glencoe on the set of the latest Harry Potter film, we tried a new device from the US called a MidgeMaster, and found that the once midge infested site of our Unit Base was now tolerable. The MidgeMaster proved to catch millions of midges and allow our production team to work in relative comfort in the Unit Base area that would otherwise have been very unwelcoming to people. The beauty of the Glen was much more enjoyable with the MidgeMaster. All the best, Robin Griggs – Location Manager’
