How MidgeBlaster can improve outdoor sports and events.

It’s always good to have an excuse for losing a game of tennis, croquet, bowls or putting, but I like my excuse to be a faulty racquet or a bump in the ground, not midges! So many outdoor sports and events have had to be abandoned because of midges, particularly in the evening – but not any longer.

My name is Juliet Caird. I am a veterinary surgeon and suffer from organophosphate (pesticide) poisoning. As a result of this, I cannot use chemical insect repellents or pesticides on myself or animals. There is a very high midge population where I live and this was obviously a huge problem to us

I bought a MidgeMaster last year, mainly to protect my grazing animals as they could not hide indoors for the evening and night and were being tortured by the midges. The machine has worked extremely well for this purpose. Within days we noticed a great improvement due to the reduction in midge numbers.

Although placed to give maximum protection to our yard and paddocks, we were delighted to find that the MidgeMaster also protects our garden and vegetable plot. It was previously unbearable to do gardening during the summer evenings. Since purchasing the MidgeMaster, we can now spend any summer evening we choose outside, in peace from the midges. We can do gardening, play boules, have barbecues or simply enjoy the weather outside.

I was so impressed by the MidgeMaster that I have now become an agent for the company, selling the machine to be used for a multitude of purposes.

Reasons to use a MidgeMaster

  • you know there will be only a very low level of midges, if any at all, at a planned event and can be certain the event won’t be abandoned due to an unbearable number of midges
  • much more good quality time can be spent outside, especially during the evenings
  • safe to use in the presence of children and animals – no harmful chemicals
  • prevents the need for insect repellents & pesticides, which are, costly, often ineffective, and hazardous to health, particularly that of children
  • much more enthusiastic and happy participants in sports & events
  • Easy operation and does not need to be checked every day.
  • Low running costs
  • Registration of your premises on our website with link between websites if requested – commercial benefits
  • flat clear areas, such as tennis courts and lawns allow easy and uninterrupted passage of the MidgeMaster attractants & are very easily cleared of midges
  • a MidgeMaster of a suitable size can be chosen e.g. Liberty Plus model would be adequate for a tennis court ( & no electric cable to trip over) or, for extremely high midge populations, a Pro model would be more suitable.
  • The Pro model covers the area of a football pitch but, if you care about the audience too, a Pro Plus model would be better.
  • Large areas for outdoor recreation can be targeted at specific sites for maximum effect, for example a golf course is likely to have some parts with a tolerable midge level but other parts e.g. near a pond/trees with intolerable midge densities. Placement of one or a few MidgeMasters at strategic sites will result in a great overall improvement and optimise the cost benefit. Similarly, the popular site/s for anglers to fish from can be protected for fisherman at an otherwise unbearably midgey loch or river.
  • Sporting events involving animals would benefit greatly as the animals would be able to perform to their best ability undisturbed by midges.

MidgeBlaster’ Tips for the use of MidgeMaster

When should we start using the machine?
As it generally takes a few days before the drop in the midge population is noticeable, and there is a further drop in the population once the breeding cycle has been interrupted (after 4-6 weeks), we recommend that the MidgeMaster be put into operation at a very minimum of 10 days in advance of an event, but preferably much longer. The longer the better. This also allows time to find out the best machine position to have maximum effect. Ideally the unit should be run from the start of the midge season right through to the end (April until October approx.)

Should we leave the MidgeMaster running continuously even when no-one is present to appreciate its effects?
Yes. The MidgeMaster is designed to operate 24 hours/day every day. This allows it to have maximum effect, progressively reducing the midge numbers. Leaving the machine turned off during the midge season will allow midge numbers to rise again between uses and the overall reduction in the midge population will not be nearly as impressive.

The running costs are low and the machine does not need to be checked every day (obviously it should be in a secure place e.g. locked tennis court).

Where do I place the MidgeMaster?
It is very important to establish the correct position for maximum midge catch rate. This is generally between the main midge source (wet area) and the people to be protected. Remember, also, that the attractant travels downwind and the midges tend to fly upwind towards their victim.
If the machine does not appear to be working well at first, change its position and you will probably be delighted by the results.

How do I keep the machine operating to maximum capacity?
Follow the manufacturer’s simple instructions, in particular remembering to replace the octenol (powerful attractant) every 21 days. We recommend that you record the change dates on your calendar.

Anyone inspecting the machine closely is likely to collect a following of a few of the midges from around the machine. It is advisable, but not essential, to place a tape around the machine, approximately 5 feet from it if possible.

Recommendation from a happy MidgeMaster owner
"I live in the South West of Scotland and before we purchased a MidgeMaster we were unable to spend our evenings outside without being tortured by midges. Any gardening in the evenings had to be abandoned and barbeques were only possible if you sat right next to the fire. There has been a dramatic reduction in the number of midges in the vacinity which makes summer evenings much more enjoyable and we can now stay out rather than having to run indoors to escape the clouds of midges. Although the machine wasn't cheap to buy initially the running costs are low and it has been well worth it when you consider our improved quality of life. I will be attending an outdoor festival soon - let's hope they've got a MidgeMaster". Alan Jamieson, Dumfries.

The MidgeMaster has been used with great success on sports grounds, at weddings, horticultural shows, and during the filming of the Harry Potter film, ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’, in Glencoe.
